One day, I got an opportunity to pick a topic of interest and get a mentor aligned for it. Deep down, I knew what I want in my career but didn't know exactly how to achieve. So, when I got this opportunity, I did not hesitate at all and choose the topic "People Skills & Executive Leadership".
May be I was not aware what exactly will be inside this topic because I have never done any research or study around these. But, it just came into my mind in the same exact format so I sent my interest forward to HRBP team. However, after sending that email, I was bit conscious about getting mocked by them. Anyways, what's done is done, bell can't be unring now.
I kept on waiting for almost 2 weeks and then got an email response.
And, I was surprised, actually shocked now. 😲
Because, the email contained the details of my mentor who was none other than the Director of the organization. He had 20+ years of corporate experience, studied from top university, handing a 500+ million dollar portfolio of a large US bank.
Until then, I only had an experience in team management, budgeting, project estimation among few other management related stuff I experienced during my first startup journey. But after this day, I have seen a huge transformation in myself. This was my transformation period from management skills to leadership.
Over the years, I learnt & practiced more towards my leadership transformation journey.
"Leadership isn't about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another." — John C. Maxwell
While working with team leads, project managers and delivery heads, I observed something very important. Despite of holding their own expertise & technical competencies, most of them lacked in handing people. Some of them kept on forcing their team to innovate while others were busy in doing follow-ups.
This reminded me that leadership isn't about charisma or corner offices. It's about who you are, how you show up, and what kind of impact you leave behind. There are 5 essential qualities that define the core of great leadership, whether you're leading an organization or a small team. These qualities will guide you throughout the journey.
1. Self-Awareness
Great leadership begins within. Leaders who are self-aware do understand their strengths, weaknesses, and emotional triggers. They don't pretend to have all the answers, but they do know how to ask the right questions. That's what makes them a great leader.
The most powerful person in the room is the one who understands themselves.
2. Lead with Empathy
Empathy isn't any soft skill. It is a very powerful skill that every leader must posses. I even sometimes say every individual shall possess, irrespective of their industry, work nature even if they are student, housewives or college kids.
Be a leader where people feel heard and valuable, not just managed.
3. Vision
A leader with vision can see potential when others see problems. Your team may not see the big picture so it becomes your responsibility to help them visualize this.
Visionary leaders inspire belief; not just in the future, but in the people who'll build it.
4. Decisiveness
Indecision is a silent killer of progress. I have seen many leaders who find it difficult to make decisions. They keep on juggling in between the what-ifs. A leader should be able to see people beyond numbers; understand how aligned they are with the culture, how much collaborative they are and lot more.
Being decisive doesn't mean being right every time. It's about being bold, learning fast, and course-correcting when needed.
5. Resilience
Tough time doesn't build resilience. How you respond to that, does. Life can hit you hard which it will. It is us who has to understand and adapt ourselves, to stay strong & think beyond the sufferings.
Resilience isn't about having it all together. It's about showing up, rising again, everytime we feel like giving up.
I wrote a blog some time back on giving up - "3 Reasons to give up on your dreams"
Leadership Transformation.
And it starts with intention. I have seen the results and experienced this transformation myself.
That's why I decided to impart all my knowledge and experience with others, empowering people and creating leaders driven by purpose, values and ethics.
Whether you're an aspiring leader or someone who's been in the game for years, the world doesn't need more bosses. It needs more real leaders; the kind who inspire action, foster growth, and make people believe in themselves.
